Our Expert on End of Life Care
Q: What is Palliative Care?
Ask Our Expert About Palliative Care
A: A type of care rooted in traditional medicine, palliative care aims to treat pain and other physical, emotional and spiritual issues. It is not only end-of-life care but is also for patients with chronic conditions like congestive heart failure, stroke or diabetes.
Ultimately, palliative care is the complete care of patients with a condition for which cure is limited, and the focus of care is on quality of life. The goal of palliative care is to help your loved one and your family to live as fully and comfortably as possible. This includes controlling pain and other symptoms and communicating clearly and often with you and your family.
Palliative care provides an important network of support and education for family members of those who are ill. For many families, the journey of caring for a loved one is filled with unknown and at times frightening situations. Our goal is to help people understand the illness better and what to expect, as well as how to work through and ultimately accept the final outcome of the illness in a way that is as positive and affirming as possible.
